Just to make myself feel at home on a birding trip, a wander locally for some Red-necked Nightjar was the order of the day.
An interesting piece of scrubland with a power line going through it providing an excellent 'ride' for walking and viewing. Although one bird was heard, it was dark before a second was heard and then sightings against the sky of three birds flying.
A great delight, but hearing there had been one sitting on the wire for some time prior to my arrival did not cheer me to the core - the sound, however was evocative in the dark and a thrill in itself.
. . . and all points in between. Places and species in the natural world that interest me on my travels and a little closer to home.
